What is BRCA

What is BRCA?

BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes repair damaged DNA. Mutations significantly increase the risk of hereditary cancers, particularly breast and ovarian cancers.

 

According to Petruccelli et al. (GeneReviews®, updated 2025), lifetime cancer risks for BRCA mutation carriers are substantial:

 

  • Breast Cancer:
    BRCA1: ~72% | BRCA2: ~69% (up to 90% in certain populations)

  • Ovarian Cancer:
    BRCA1: ~39–44% | BRCA2: ~11–17%

  • Other Cancers:
    Elevated risks include prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and melanoma.

 

A positive BRCA result indicates heightened lifelong cancer risk, not necessarily current disease.

 

Rapid advances in science and preventive medicine contrast sharply with gaps in broad public awareness, patient-centered care, and comprehensive psychosocial support.
